What is CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance For Studies) Letter in the UK?

CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter is an important document for getting UK student visa. To study in the UK, international students needs to get a Tier-4 (student visa). However, without CAS letter student visa cannot be issued.  This letter has a unique number presenting details of the institute that agrees to be the sponsor of the applicant’s Tier-4 study visa

What Information Does CAS Letter Provides?

14-digit reference number for the CAS
Sponsor's License Number (SLN) of the university where applicant intends to study
Sponsor's Address
Qualifications which helped applicant to secure a place in the university
Start and End dates of course
Tuition fees for the first year or the entire course
Any tuition fees that you have already paid to the university
Any accommodation fees that you have already paid
Assessment of your English Language Ability i.e. IELTS or any other test scores

Procedure of Issuing CAS Letter

Every university follows a different procedure. Once the offer is accepted, the university, on behalf of the student, contact the UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) for the CAS number and verifies that the student is accepted by the University/Institute. However, general procedure is as below:

  • An email will be sent by the UK university to the email ID provided by the student during the application for admission. 
  • Student will then have to log in to the provided link in the email. 
  • An option will be displayed to the student on the screen to check his/her CAS statement.
  • At times, students may be required to request a CAS number. For this, student will have to upload documents such as financial evidence, academic certificates, TB certificates, and an ATAS certificate (if applicable). 
  • After submitting all documents, student will obtain a link which will direct them to their CAS statement. 
  • Every relevant details related to the student’s admission will be there in the CAS statement. 
  • In case of any error in the CAS statement, the student will have to send an email to the immigration compliance team regarding the same, along with the rectifications. 
  • Once every details are submitted, student will receive another email regarding the final CAS statement and CAS number. 

What is the CAS Letter Processing Time?

The CAS letter is generally issued on a first-come-first-served basis. Usually, universities will take 10 days to send CAS number after you confirm the details in the statement. If you do not receive your CAS number within 20 days, you are advised to send an email to admission committee or immigration compliance team of university to bring their attention. 

What is Combined CAS Number?

A combined CAS number is issued to those students who will be pursuing more than one course together at the same university. Through a combined CAS number, students can apply for single visa which will give permission to stay in the UK till both their courses are complete.

Yes, a CAS letter application can be rejected in case any inconsistencies are found in the information provided by the student. 

Usually, the university sends the CAS letter in 2-3 business days after thoroughly verifying the documents provided by the student. However, there is no fixed time duration taken by a university to release it. 

Although, CAS is an important document for applying a UK student visa, it does not guarantee a student visa. 

A very few applications get refused due to applicant enter incorrect information, fail to clear the pre-CAS interview, or present insufficent funds.
