Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada: Who Can Apply?

Overview of Post-Graduate Work Permit

The Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have completed their higher studies in Canada from Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit and remain and work in Canada. But, applicants must apply for the work permit within 180 days of graduation or the date of receiving their transcripts.

The Post Graduate Work Permit in Canada allows students to stay in Canada and gain Canadian work experience after completing their graduation. Students who have received a Post Graduate Work Permit in Canada can stay for a maximum of 3 years. Canada’s Post Graduate Work Permit enables the candidates to get a step closer to achieving a permanent resident status. 

What is Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

A Designated Learning Institute (DLI) is a institute (College / University) that has been approved by a provincial or territorial government to allow international students to complete an education qualification in Canada. 

Here is how you can learn if a particular college or university is a Designated Learning Institute or not:

Public and Private Secondary Institution: Public Institutions including a college or university, a school for learning trading, technical institutes, CEGEP (only for Quebec), etc.. In addition, it also includes private learning institutions that operate as per similar regulations as public institutions in Quebec.
Post-secondary institution or private secondary institutes in Quebec: This includes learning institutions providing relevant programs covering over 900 hours of studies for a diploma or vocational studies course.
Private Canadian Institutions regulated by provincial statute: Such institutions offer degrees but are limited to only a few programs. It can include a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree that is only authorized by the provincial government.

Eligibility to Apply for PGWP

Applicants should be at least 18 years of age, while applying for PGWP
Applicants should complete at least eight months or longer program in any Designated Learning Institute offering a Certificate / Diploma or a Degree Program.
Applicants should have a valid study permit.
Applicants should have maintained full-time status for each semester while studying, and only the final semester can be part-time.
If an applicant has completed a particular course or program requiring eight months within six months via an accelerated program, he/she may be eligible to apply for a PGWP.
Suppose an applicant transferred from on college to another college that is not a Designated Learning Institution, only the total months of studies with a DLI will be calculated.
Applicants can apply for the Canada's Post Graduate Work Permit by extending their stay visa visitor card. or then can come back to their native country and then apply for a PGWP

Validity of Post Graduate Work Permit

The Government of Canada offers a Post Graduate Work Permit to candidates who have completed their studies in Canada at Designated Learning Institutes (DLI). This enable candidates to plan their long-term career in Canada. Candidates can apply for jobs in Canada. Candidates can also gain a permanent resident status while on PGWP thru various possible opportunities offered by IRCC.

Since, it is an open work permit, candidates do not need to worry about location, and employer sponsorship. They can apply for any job suitable to them in any province or territory. Also, the employer and candidates do not need to worry about the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

The Validity of Post Graduate Work Permit may vary and depend on the following factors:

If the study time is less than 1 year but greater than 8 months, the Post Graduate Work Permit will only be valid for 1 year.
If the study time is greater than 1 year and less than 2 years, Post Graduate Work Permit will be equivalent to the length of their study duration.
Candidates will only get a Post Graduate Work Permit for 3 years, if their length of their study program is for 2 years or more.

Note: It is advised to confirm with the learning institution you choose before an admission if it is a Designated Learning Institute or not. Because, Post Graduate Work Permit is provided to the students who have completed their graduation from DLI only.
